Every summer, as temperatures rise and the sun blazes down upon Ottawa, many of us flock to the cottages or indulge in our favourite outdoor activities. But as we do so, it’s important to remember those who are less fortunate, who may not have a safe place to call home, and women who have been victims of domestic violence. That’s why donating to women’s shelters during summertime is so crucial.

At first, it was just small things. He would get angry if I didn't answer his calls or texts right away. Then he started criticizing my clothes and my friends. Before I knew it, he was manipulating me, and I was in isolation.

I never thought I would become a survivor of domestic violence. I was in love with a man who seemed perfect; he was charming, handsome, and had a successful career. But soon enough, I found out the hard way that he had a darker side.

In moments of desperation, I couldn't see clearly, until a friend sent me Harmony House's video about the "Warning signs of Coercive Abuse," and I was able to recognize and flag some signs in my own life. With Harmony House Therapy's help, I have found the power within.
